As most of us are hurting financially, shelters are also hurting.  Some great writers on PNN have mentioned giving food and money to shelters and food banks when possible.  I love this idea.  Here is another goodie from people helping others. 

As shelters run out of funds and have to make tough choices about feeding their visitors or providing them with other necessities such as toiletries, they have to pick the food.  That was until Holland Cruise Lines stepped up to the plate.

Holland Cruise Lines is taking all of their toiletries, empty or not, and donating them to homeless shelters.  These additional additional shampoos, soaps, and conditioners are brought to the nearest port when the ship docks and then distributed by Holland Cruise Lines employees to the local shelters.  Shelter staff members comment that these gifts are helping the shelter to be able to provide food and other necessities to those that visit the shelter.

Not only is this donation helping the shelters, it is also helping the self-esteem of the homeless.  They are now able to get more frequent showers which helps them to feel better about themselves (and may help to find a job as well!)
