McDonalds - Social Irresponsibility?

McDonalds - Social Irresponsibility?

On this morning news broadcast - I was watching a story from Arkansas that gets me more than a little bit ticked at McDonalds!  Last August, a man and his girlfriend were fighting inside a McDonalds.  The man started beating up his girlfriend.  An employee by the name of Nigel Hackett came to the rescue of the girlfriend.  As Nigel and the future wife-beater were scuffling the fight led outdoors.  Moments later, Nigel stumbled back into the restaurant and collapsed from gun-shot wounds.  Now, he has asked McDonalds for $300,000 to pay for worker's compensation.

McDonald's insurers won't pay the claim because it says that Nigel's actions fell outside the scope of his employment.  I beg to differ!  What about keeping the restaurant a safe place for customers to eat at?  If Nigel had seen a puddle of Coke on the floor, would he not be obligated to clean it up in order to keep customer's from falling on the wet floor?  Nigel probably saved many lives that day!  What about if the gun-toting thug had shot everyone inside McDonald's?  He was clearly going to shoot somebody that day!

For a corporation that has a cleaning checklist on the bathroom door that mandates refreshing the toilet paper for the sake of the customer's hygeine, I have a hard time swallowing the idea of it not making Nigel's actions to protect the welfare of the customer an obligation that he had to perform in his regular duties at McDonalds.

McDonalds - shame on you!  If your insurer won't pay for the Nigel's medical bills, then YOU should!  Since the economic downturn, McDonald's has been raking in money hand over fist.  Be thankful that Nigel kept your restaurant from turning into a blood-bath and pay his bills!
